GLOBAL INDUSTRY-WIDE ORGANIZATION: UNITE!

The British labour Union UNITE, a merger of T&G and Amicus, has a big Organising Department. Due to the work of this department, 89% of employees in the meat industry are represented by the union in collective bargaining and 65% are members of the union. This new foundation has contributed to significant successes: The supermarket chain ASDA (WALMART) for example has committed itself to buying only from suppliers who pay an equal wage to temporary workers and permanent employees. Its successes in the meat industry have forced the union to pursue global organisation of this industrial sector, in order to prevent – in the medium term - concerns from relocating to countries where worker’s organisations are less successful.
